Libreria Acqua Alta is one of those quirky, must-visit spots in Venice that really captures the city’s charm. It’s free to enter, which is great, but be prepared—it can get quite crowded, especially during the day. The shop is packed with books piled in bathtubs, gondolas, and every nook imaginable, giving it a magical, slightly chaotic feel. The highlight for me was the little outdoor terrace made of stacked books—it’s a lovely viewpoint and a perfect photo spot overlooking the canal. Even if you’re not there to buy a book, it’s worth popping in just for the atmosphere and a few pictures. A charming, unique place that’s very “Venice.”

A bookstore with the view of canal, filled to the brim with books both vintage and new, a cat who might own the bookstore, vintage postcards that tells the stories of Venice, a bookstore that gets flooded during acqua alta (high water due to high tides) and name of the bookstore is the same as the event. With all these facts, this shop is a must visit if you are in Venice. Anyone who visits there would fall in love with this place. Also make sure to collect something special from this shop because they have such amazing unique gifts in the form of books, be it vintage, special copies, kids and so much more. As well as magnets and that too at such reasonable costs.

We had not set out for here on an early morning wander but turned a corner and from a bridge saw the rear door gondola. We thought we should pop in. Initially it was quiet, we had space to look and choose some bits and pieces but suddenly it was rammed you could only walk one way and the poor guy directing trying to explain it was a book shop.
What was sad was the amount of people stopping for photos of each other, themselves and the surroundings but not purchasing anything... Without trade how do the shops survive?!
People taking photos for themselves, their insta account etc just think... If it's worth a visit, you are not paying an entry fee, show the owner some courtesy buy a post card, a magnet of Venice, a poster, a paper journal, a tote bag or even a book!

Such a cute little bookstore, lots of variety and so many nice books. Does get very busy during the day. The resident cat was so adorable, he came out of the shop and went over to the local hair dresser to go inside.

We were left with a negative impression. The staff was very rude. We visited in December, when the tourist flow is clearly lower than in other seasons, yet the store was still overcrowded. By the book staircase, there’s a specially assigned person yelling that you shouldn’t take photos and that you should get off it quickly.

Unique insta worthy bookmark in Venice. The deco and its backyard book display makes it stands out as a bookstore. Great variety of books, very crowded, very cramped as it is a narrow walkway within the store. They have some very unusual books including books on occults, spell use, witchcraft and demonology. Visit once if in Venice.

Totally worth the visit. Unfortunately we left it for last minute so we did not have that much time to look around. Would recommend to take atleast 1h to look around for interesting books.

A very different and amazing place in Venice. Not just for book lovers. Even if you are a tourist like me, highly recommended to visit it and take a 5mins round just to see how the bookshops maintain quality of book in such a wet surrounding. Everything is different and amazing.
